About

Turquoise & Variscite

Gemstones of LIFE!

Both turquoise and variscite are very special gemstones…they are stones connected to life! Two of their main components, phosphorous (much of which comes from ancient bone and other life forms) and water are critical ingredients of life. Oxygen is also a key element, oxidizing the various metals to give the stones their beautiful colors. Turquoise and variscite are truly gems dependent on a life-giving planet…rarities, not just here on Earth, but throughout the Universe! Since the time of the Ancients turquoise has been revered as a protector and a symbol of sky and water. May it always protect you and bring you joy!

Variscite is a mineral closely related to turquoise – mineralogically speaking, a “hydrous aluminum phosphate” – with the distinct difference of containing no copper. Copper gives turquoise its characteristic blue color. Without copper or other metal impurities, variscite in its purest form is white, but often it occurs in a variety of colors: green, yellow, orange, and black. Chromium and vanadium are the metals reported to give variscite its bright green colors, while iron, manganese and other metals can contribute to its other colors. Variscite from our mines in Nevada has a high silica content which gives it hardness and excellent durability for use in jewelry. Variscite is said to have properties that help alleviate worry, provide encouragement, and inspire hope. A valuable stone in these times. May it always provide you solace and hope!

Because of the unique composition of its geology, each locality where turquoise and variscite are found imparts its own character on the stone. Each locality also has its own individual history. Some mines have been worked for these gems for many decades, and now we have the fortunate opportunity to carry this history forward. And some mines we have discovered only recently! Look at each mine on our site for more information on its history. There are also several fine publications that you can refer to for more history and information on many of the mines.
